Our Favourite Things To Do In Wanaka!

Wanaka is hands down one of our favourite spots in New Zealand. Picture a stunning lake framed by towering mountain peaks, cascading waterfalls, lavender fields, vineyards, and lush forests. While you’re here, you can choose from some of the country’s most renowned day hikes, beautiful views, and cruisy activities. Get ready to explore one of New Zealand’s most beautiful places!

1. Enjoy The Hike & Views From Roy’s Peak

Just 10 minutes from Wanaka, this popular hike is a must-do. The 16 km (10 mile) out-and-back trail takes about 5 to 7 hours to complete, with a challenging ascent. But the effort is well worth it—once you reach the top of Roy’s Peak, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Wanaka, Glendhu Bay, the town of Wanaka, and the stunning Mount Aspiring National Park.

2. Hike The Rob Roy Glacier Trek!

This popular hike offers a chance to explore part of Mount Aspiring National Park and witness the stunning Rob Roy Glacier. The trail is an easy 10 km round trip, taking 3 to 4 hours to complete, with the trailhead located about an hour’s drive from Wanaka.

As you hike, you’ll enjoy views of the Matukituki River, vibrant forests, and the star of the show—Rob Roy Glacier, making this trek a truly scenic adventure.

3. Cruise Around Lake Wanaka

One of the best things to do in Wanaka is a take a boat cruise, kayak, or paddle board around the lake for the day. There’s nothing like basking in the sun on some of the clearest water that New Zealand has to offer while being fully immersed in peace and tranquility.

4. See The Wanaka Tree

Perched in the shallow waters of Lake Wanaka, just off the shore, stands a lone willow tree that has become one of New Zealand’s most photographed landmarks. In 2014, a photo of this iconic tree won the New Zealand Geographic photograph of the year, catapulting it into global fame. Since then, photographers and Instagrammers from around the world have flocked to capture its beauty.

Now, it’s so popular on Instagram that it’s famously known as #ThatWanakaTree.

5. Frolic Through The Wanaka Lavender Farm!

This enchanting spot is one of the most picturesque places to visit in Wanaka. Spanning 20 acres, the Lavender Farm boasts beautifully manicured gardens filled with vibrant flowers, flourishing fruit and vegetable patches, and fields of stunning lavender. You’ll also find animal pens and plenty of farm animals to meet.

During your visit, you can wander through the gardens, sample delicious honey and lavender products, enjoy a cup of tea, and even try your hand at Giant Jenga. Plan to spend about 1 to 2 hours here.

The Lavender Farm is open year-round, but the best time to catch the lavender in full bloom is during summer (December through February), with the blossoms often lasting into autumn.

6. Make A Visit To Mou Waho Island!

Mou Waho Island, situated on Lake Wanaka, is a hidden gem that can only be accessed by boat. Once you arrive, you’ll have the chance to explore one of New Zealand’s most unique and intriguing islands. Mou Waho is famously described as an island in a lake, on an island in a lake, on an island in the ocean—a natural wonder that will leave you in awe!
