Day 1: Auckland

Nau Mai, Haere Mai! Welcome to Aotearoa – New Zealand!

Today, you’ll meet your fellow Travel Buddies and your Local Bud, who will go over the itinerary and get you set up for a city tour to explore the CBD. In the afternoon, consider checking out the waterfront or hopping on the public bus to Mt. Eden, one of Auckland’s dormant volcanoes. This evening, we’ll organize a welcome dinner at your accommodation before hitting the town for a fun night out.

Day 2: Waiheke Island

Today you’ll take the ferry to Waiheke Island! This island combines beach vibes and vineyards. Thanks to its microclimate, Waiheke is a few degrees warmer than the mainland. On the ferry ride, you’ll pass Rangitoto Volcano—keep an eye out for orcas and dolphins in the Hauraki Gulf. Once there, hop on the bus or talk to your Local Bud about booking a car. Explore the island’s many beaches, cafes, and vineyards for a taste of island life. Be sure to catch the last ferry back for your final night in the city. Tomorrow is going to be a big day!

Day 3: Waitomo Caves & Hobbiton

This morning, you’ll start early and head to SkyCity with your bags for the bus to Waitomo Caves & Hobbiton! Journey through Waikato’s lush farmland to Waitomo and explore the Glowworm Caves. Traverse underground tunnels and witness stunning limestone formations. Experience the enchantment of a silent underground boat ride, with thousands of glowworms shining overhead.

After emerging, take a short walk through the forest to the Waitomo Caves visitor center. Next, journey across the countryside to the Hobbiton Movie Set for a guided tour and learn how the world’s largest “green set” was created in remarkable detail. Discover charming Hobbiton structures and hear filming secrets. Enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn before heading to Rotorua, the Maori culture capital.

Day 4: Maori Cultural Day

Morena! Enjoy a leisurely morning before spending the afternoon exploring. Consider going white water rafting, visiting Mt. Tarawera, or relaxing in the hot pools.

The Te Puia experience starts at 4PM with a fully guided tour that enhances your visit to this historic geothermal valley. Each guide shares a personal touch to help visitors truly connect with Te Puia. Discover the stunning landscape of native bush, geysers, and mud pools, and feel the power of Pōhutu Geyser, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere! Get up close with one of New Zealand’s national treasures in the new Kiwi Conservation Centre.

Visit the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and Āhua Gallery, where traditional crafts are taught to preserve the culture. After working up an appetite, enjoy a delicious buffet at our renowned Pātaka Kai Restaurant & Bar, featuring a Hangi-style meal, followed by an exhilarating cultural performance. If you’re still curious, head back into the geothermal wonderland to see the world-famous Pōhutu Geyser again.

Day 5: Free Day Rotorua

Today is a free day for you to explore Rotorua and experience any of its numerous attractions. Visit the blue and green lakes, stroll through the redwood forests, or unwind in a hot spring. Tomorrow, you’ll be heading to your next destination.

Day 6: Sailing Lake Taupo

This morning, you’ll travel to the heart of New Zealand’s central volcanic plateau, where Lake Taupo, Australasia’s largest freshwater lake, is situated. Walk along the shore and admire the mountains in the backdrop.

In the afternoon, board a sailing boat and cruise on the lake, passing the famous Maori rock carvings. Bring some drinks and enjoy the scenery before going to dinner with your new travel companions. It might seem odd, but we suggest visiting the McDonald’s in Taupo. It’s the world’s most unique McDonald’s, with a dining room inside a vintage airplane.

Day 7: Free Day/Tongariro Crossing

Today offers flexibility. Visit Huka Falls, walk for 30 minutes to the Spa Thermal Park, or take a trip around the lake.

For thrill-seekers, why not skydive over Taupo from 15,000 feet? If you prefer hiking, head to Tongariro National Park. Voted one of the world’s best day hikes, the Tongariro Crossing takes you over two volcanoes and is the filming site for Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. Book your shuttles and guide in advance. Talk to your Local Buddies for reservations.

Day 8: Travel Day To Wellington

Today is a big travel day, so fuel up with a hearty breakfast at one of Taupo’s cafes before heading to the bus stop. On the way to Wellington, you’ll drive around Lake Taupo’s southern end and enjoy its natural beauty. The Desert Road is one of our favorite North Island drives. Connecting Rangipo and Waiouru, the gentle curves and hills make this road a joy to travel. With its tussock, raoulia, rocky plains, and snow-capped mountains, this area is a uniquely beautiful part of New Zealand.

Arriving in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, we’ll arrange a shuttle to your accommodation, so you can unpack and enjoy the city nightlife.

Day 9: Capital City & Te Papa Museum

Today is your chance to explore the capital. Visit the National Museum, Te Papa, to dive into New Zealand’s history, check out the Parliament buildings—affectionately called “the Beehive” by locals—and explore the vibrant markets and shops. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, a visit to Weta Workshop is a must—you’ll see the props and studios that brought LOTR to life!

Tonight, enjoy your final dinner on the North Island and soak up the city’s nightlife.

Day 10: Travel Day & Interislander

Today we bid farewell to the North Island and board the ferry. Arrive at the terminal early to secure a great spot on the ferry as you cross the Cook Strait. This journey is a highlight in itself as you sail through the strait and Marlborough Sounds. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins before reaching the South Island town of Picton. From there, rejoin the bus and head to Nelson, the geographical center of New Zealand.

Nelson is renowned for its year-round sunshine, golden beaches, national parks, local produce, fresh seafood, and vibrant artistic community. It’s also a popular starting point for exploring nearby caving sites, vineyards, and Abel Tasman National Park.

Day 11: Abel Tasman National Park Day Option

Today, explore one of New Zealand’s newest National Parks. Abel Tasman National Park, the smallest in the country, offers an easily-accessible coastal paradise perfect for both relaxation and adventure. Known for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and the renowned coast track, you can spend the day hiking or kayaking to discover stunning coves and the iconic Split Apple Rock.

If that’s not your scene, consider a wine tour. Nelson is near the famous Marlborough Wine Region, renowned for its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnays. Join a vineyard tour to visit the wineries and enjoy a day of tasting.

Day 12: Travel Day Christchurch

Okay, deep breath! Today is your longest travel day, but it will be worth it!

After breakfast, you’ll board the bus to Blenheim in the Marlborough region. You’ll have time for lunch, so why not enjoy a wine tasting at one of the many local spots? Following lunch, continue south on the bus down the East Coast of the South Island, where mountains meet the sea. Watch for seal colonies on the rocks and the stunning views of Kaikoura before arriving in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. Your accommodation is near the bus terminal, so drop off your bags and head downstairs for a group dinner.

Day 13: Christchurch City

Today is your chance to explore Christchurch. Visit the historic cathedral, which was damaged during the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. While the city is still rebuilding, you’ll see its resilience and many attractions. Take a tram to the vibrant New Regent Street, and if the weather permits, catch a bus to Sumner, Christchurch’s beach. For a broader adventure, consider a day trip to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula.

Day 14: Lake Tekapo & Dark Sky Night

Today, you’ll head to one of New Zealand’s most stunning lakes: Tekapo. The striking aqua-blue glacial waters are truly mesmerizing! Upon arrival, we’ll arrange a shuttle to your accommodation. We’ll stay for two nights to ensure you enjoy exceptional stargazing, as Tekapo is New Zealand’s Dark Sky Reserve. You’ll have the chance to see the Milky Way and nebulae! If you’re interested, you might also visit the observatory for an even closer view.

Day 15: Lake Tekapo

Today is yours to explore. Take advantage of some stunning walks and visit one of New Zealand’s most scenic wedding spots, The Church of the Good Shepherd.

You also have the option for a day trip to Aoraki, the tallest mountain in Australasia. Enjoy the Hooker Valley hike and see the training grounds of Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first climbers of Everest. Back in Tekapo for the evening, you’ll get another chance to marvel at the Dark Sky.

Day 16: Queenstown

Today, you’ll journey to the incredible Queenstown, known as the adventure capital of the world. Explore the vibrant town center, packed with shops, markets, and eateries. Don’t miss the famous Fergburger, a local favorite! Tonight, get ready for a night out as you discover the city’s stylish bars and lively nightclubs.

Day 17: Skippers Canyon Jetboat & Free Day

This morning, embark on an exhilarating jet boating tour through the historic Skippers Canyon, taking in breathtaking scenery along the notorious Skippers Road. Experience the rush of adrenaline as you race deep into the canyon, navigating the dramatic cliffs of the Shotover River.

In the afternoon, consider talking to your local rep about booking another activity, as the city offers plenty. Alternatively, hike up Queenstown Hill to catch the sunset. With vibrant nightlife awaiting, make the most of another night out with your group.

Day 18: Milford Sound

Prepare for an incredible day as you leave Queenstown for Milford Sound on a full-day adventure. Travel in style in a luxurious Mercedes Sprinter van, enjoying commentary, panoramic views, and several scenic stops to enhance your road trip experience.

Upon arrival in Milford Sound, board a 2-hour small boat nature cruise. Take in stunning waterfalls, observe fur seals, and perhaps spot dolphins, all while your guide shares fascinating details about the fjord’s splendor. Today will surely be unforgettable.

Day 20: Wanaka

As you head to Wanaka this morning, enjoy the breathtaking Middle Earth scenery as you pass through famous Lord of the Rings filming spots. With its grand peaks and glacial blue lake, Wanaka is easily one of New Zealand’s most scenic mountain towns. The area boasts beautiful hikes and bike rides, offering a great chance to relax. Explore the town, hike up Roys Peak, or visit the renowned Wanaka Tree.

Day 21: Franz Josef

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Refunds will be processed according to the following time frames:
Cancellations within 14 Days of the start date incur a 100 % fee.
Within 21 Days of the start date incur a 80% fee

Cancellations outside of these periods incur a 50% fee.

Please note that changes to the itinerary may occur due to weather, operator changes & cancellations. A suitable and comparable replacement will take place on such occasions.

If a third party operator cancels on the Adventure Pack, we will organise a replacement activity. If a suitable replacement cannot be found, a fee will be refunded.

Do you offer payment plans?

Absolutely, we understand that paying off a big trip in one go isn’t always that easy. We offer flexible payment plans to suit all types of travellers with zero interest or fee’s (minimum $100NZD deposit required).

Do I need travel insurance?

We endorse the recommendation that all travellers take out travel insurance. If you already have Travel Insurance please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.

Can I book a package but travel in the reverse direction?

Absolutely, just let us know your preferred start and finish location and we’ll make it work.

What is the best way to travel New Zealand?

There is definitely no wrong way to travel New Zealand. Depending on what type of traveller you are, you might enjoy a Campervan road trip over the Hop On Hop Off Bus Packages. We recommend booking a free consultation with one our friendly team and they can tailor their recommendation to your personality and  travel plans.

What if something comes up and I can't make my tour?

We get it. Life is all about the unexpected, especially when you are travelling. If you are unable to make your pre-arranged tour you will need to reach out to our [email protected] so we can give you a helping hand. In all cases we strongly recommend having a valid travel insurance policy which covers you for unexpected cancellations.
