You’ll be cruising through the stunning head of Lake Wakatipu – New Zealand’s longest lake, weaving alongside braided, glacial-fed rivers, taking on daring river crossings, and immersing yourself in a visualyl spectacular scenery.
You will get some all time views of The Misty Mountains, The Wizard’s Vale, and The Mighty Methedras – it’s a visual symphony that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. And here’s the kicker – this adventure isn’t just for the pros; it’s tailor-made for everyone, from rookies to seasoned riders. Ride alongside braided, glacial fed rivers. This adventure offers river crossings and spectacular scenery, including views of The Misty Mountains, The Wizard’s Vale and The Mighty Methedras. An unforgettable experience for all levels of rider and a great option for mixed ability couples and groups.
Before you head out, yur friendly, experienced guides will take you through an intro session on horsemanship and you’ll get a chance to bond with your horse on the ground and then in the saddle. This session will set you up for a fun, harmonious ride and you’ll feel like a horseman (or horsewoman) as you venture through the coveted landscapes of the Glenorchy river systems with its dramatic mountain backdrop. An experience you won’t forget!
*This ride is walking with some trotting at the discretion of the guide. Faster paces are dependent on rider abilities and environmental factors and are not guaranteed on any ride.

Lighthorse Adventures are located in the Dart Valley, Glenorchy. You will need to allow 1 hour to drive from Queenstown.

Kia ora – Welcome to Lighthorse Adventures. Please read through the following in relation to your ride.
Our horse treks carry a degree of risk; you need to be aware that we cannot absolutely guarantee your safety.
Lighthorse Adventures operates in a wilderness environment and works closely with animals, these both present hazards, including, but not limited to:
Falling from a horse
Injuries resulting directly from horses and other animals
Heavy rainfall
Cold exposure
Height
Flooding
Uneven terrain
Slip, trips and falls
Tree fall
Sun exposure
The risk of falling from a horse is affected by lots of factors including weather conditions, natural animal behaviour, ground conditions and rider behaviour/ability. It is important that you understand the risks of participating in this activity. Please let our staff know of any concerns you may have.
Please be alert around the horses; only approach horses from the front or the sides – never from behind.
Please advise your guide of any medical conditions you have and/or any medication you are taking – some conditions may prevent you from participating. Please ensure that you are carrying any important medication with you. Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a safety hazard. Please tell us of any prescribed medicines you are taking which may affect your balance.
The helmets provided must be worn at all times. If your guide deems your footwear unsuitable you must wear a pair of our riding boots. Small cameras may be carried while riding, but larger bulkier items (backpacks, large cameras, etc) are not allowed – please adhere to the advice of your guide.
For safety reasons:
If you are pregnant you are not permitted to ride.
If you have back issues that may be triggered by riding , you are not permitted to ride.
For the health and wellbeing of our horses we have a strict rider weight limit of 105kg. Please note this and provide accurate weight when booking. We reserve the right to weigh all customers on the day of the ride and if they exceed the rider weight limit they will not be permitted to ride and a full charge will apply. For anything outside of these weight limits custom arrangements must be made prior to booking.
For your safety you are required to pay careful attention, listen to and follow instructions of your guides at all times.
Guides reserve the right to shorten, change or cancel trips for customers whose fitness or ability is not appropriate to the trip on which they are booked. If you are unable to complete the trek once the trip has departed, you will not be entitled to a refund.
We accept no responsibility for any personal belongings that are taken on treks or left at our office.
Booking Terms and Conditions:
Weather:
While we do run in all weather conditions including rain, wind and snow, all bookings are subject to weather and safety calls. We may deem the weather unsuitable for a certain type of ride, or we may deem it unsuitable for all rides. If the weather is unsuitable for a certain type of ride, we may be able to offer you a type of ride that would be more suitable. This call will be made by the team, if you have any concerns about the forecast for the day please feel welcome to contact the team by phone, +6421766437, or email, [email protected]. If we can run the trek and the client chooses not to ride, there will be no refund, if we cancel the ride and cannot provide the client with an alternative, we will issue a refund.
Weather calls for the morning departure of the River Wild are made between 7-7:30am on the day of the ride, calls for all other ride departures will be made through out the day, either as the forecast develops or 2 hours before your ride’s departure time. Please ensure that you have provided our team with a working phone number for NZ, if you have an international number and change to an NZ sim upon arrival to the country, please inform us of this by email.

Cancellation Policy:
For The Pony Express, The Easy Rider, The River Wild and Private Lessons:
Customer cancellations must be made with a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to the day of your booked ride to qualify for a booking re-schedule or refund. Cancellations and booking changes made after 30 days, but prior to 24 hours will incur a 10% of the total booking fee, cancellations made within 24 hours of the day of your booked ride are non-refundable.
For The Graze & Glory, The Ride of The Kings & Private/Custom Rides:
Cancellations must be made with a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to the day of your booked ride to qualify for a booking re-schedule or refund. Cancellations and booking changes made after 30 days, but prior to 48 hours will incur a 10% of the total booking fee, cancellations and changes made within 48 hours of the day of your booked ride are non-refundable.
For Overnight and Multi-Day Rides:
Cancellations and booking changes made after 30 days, but prior to 10 days will incur a 10% of the total booking fee, cancellations made within 10 days, but prior to 7 days of the day of your booked ride will incur a 50% cancellation fee. Cancellation within 7 days of your booked ride are non-refundable.
For Clinics:
If a customer cancels more than 30 days from the clinic date, they are able receive a refund for any fees paid.
If a customer cancels less than 30 days from the clinic date, but more than 14 days before the clinic date, they will lose their deposit but will be refunded the other 50% paid.
If a customer cancels less than 14 days from the clinic date, they will not receive any refund.
Media Release:
Our team capture photos of all riders, preserving the magic of your experience for media purchases upon completion of your experience and advertising. We respect the privacy of all riders, so If you prefer not to have your images featured in any advertisements, such as print or social media placement, simply let our friendly staff know on the day, and we’ll ensure your request is honoured.

Absolutely, we understand that paying off a big trip in one go isn’t always that easy. We offer flexible payment plans to suit all types of travellers with zero interest or fee’s (minimum $100NZD deposit required).
We endorse the recommendation that all travellers take out travel insurance. If you already have Travel Insurance please understand that it is your responsibility to ensure that your Travel Insurance covers you for all of the adventure style travel you have booked with us.
